What are sticky traps used for?

Wet-sticky traps are used to trap flying insects and are useful for indicating the presence of pests. Yellow traps are particularly useful for attracting sciarids, shoreflies, aphids, whitefly and leafminers and will also trap thrips. The blue traps are more attractive to thrips, hence the two colours. Such traps are also useful for picking up signs of pest invasion into a greenhouse from doors or vents. For weekly monitoring of pests, we recommend a different trap, the dry-sticky TAKITRAP, which has 4 removable panels.

What types of sticky trap are available?

Syngenta Bioline supplies two types of wet-sticky traps: panel traps and roller traps in blue or yellow. The glue is on both sides of the plastic trap, and is of the wet-sticky type. The large size of these traps offers maximum sticky surface and they are the most economical traps to buy. They are best hung free floating in the air space above plants. The strips are made of firm, but flexible Polyethylene for long life. There are three holes on each strip to facilitate fixing of the strips to string, nails or surfaces.

How are sticky traps used?

The height at which the trap is hung in relation to the crop canopy will affect the number of insects caught. A trap can be left in position for several weeks. If it becomes full of insects, then its efficiency at trapping will decline. At this point the trap should be changed. Identification of the insects requires experience and training. Please contact a field representative of Syngenta Bioline or the technician of our distributor for assistance in this matter.

Instructions for use

Panel traps: Remove traps from outer bag, peel apart rapidly to avoid the formation of "strings" and suspend in the crop just above the plant canopy (about 30cm). Adjust the position of the traps as the crop grows.
Roller traps: warm up before use. See instructions on reverse side of this sheet.

Storage and transport

Avoid extremes of temperature and store in a cool dark room in the original packing

Special instructions for mounting roller traps (2 people)

Equipment list:
Roller trap 100 metre long (warmed up).
Scissors
Clothes pegs (1/metre (100 per roller trap)
Strong string (120 metres per roller trap)
A round stick to put through the roller spool (eg small broom handle)

1

Before trying to unroll the trap, place it overnight in a warm place to allow the glue to become soft and pliable. This will make unwinding the trap much easier

Trap sizes: 30cm rolls are suitable for taller crops, the 15cm width for short crops to reduce cost and avoid potential shading problems.

2

Tie a tight length of strong string to two posts along the crop, at lengths of about 20 meters at a time. Make bows to enable you to loosen it later to move in up and down the post. Make sure it is under good tension and straight.

3

At 4-5 meter intervals make short string ties onto posts to fix the string in position, using bows such that these ties can be loosened later.

4

Two people are needed to put the trap up, 1 person to unroll it and 1 person to peg the sticky sheet to the string. Unroll the first 50cm and wrap it flat, vertically around the 1st post applying sideways pressure to keep it in position. The upper edge of the plastic sheet is in line with the position of the string.

5

As the trap is slowly unrolled by the first person, the second person folds the top edge over the string and applies the peg to keep it in place. A second peg is hung on the bottom edge to keep the wet sticky film straight. The pegs are placed at approximately 2 metre intervals.

6

The trap hangs in place with the pegs and the string can be loosened and lowered onto the posts down to the crop canopy. As the crop grows, the string can be loosened and raised to maintain the optimal position for capturing insects. To remove the trap, rewind it onto the roller and dispose of by incineration. The string can be removed or re-used to set a new trap
