Leafminer parasite
|
The wasp lays eggs next to the paralyzed leaf-miner larvae, which hatch and feed on it. Stung larvae discolour and move away from the tip of the mine and become flaccid and unresponsive. Multiple parasitism is common, but can produce smaller adults. The parasitoid pupates inside the leaf mine. To clean up high populations of leaf-miner, use Abamectin (VERTIMEC®/AGRIMEC®) or Cyromazine (TRIGARD®)
Release early in the morning or in late afternoon. Undo the lid, regulate release of wasps by gently tapping and inclining the bottle whilst walking through the crop. Distribute as widely as possible .
2 releases of 0.25 – 0.5 adults/sqm, 1 wk intervals. Use yellow sticky traps to monitor adult leaf-miner emergence. Early releases (Jan-May) establish best on larger leaf-miner larvae. The 2nd & 3rd leafminer instars are ideal for parasitism.
Treat the 2nd generation 1 week after the catch increases and new mines begin to appear. Continue monitoring traps and repeat procedure when leaf-miner population surges.
