Amblyline d logo

Amblyseius degenerans is a predatory mite from the family Phytoseiidae, used for the control of Western Flower Thrips on sweet peppers in Northern Europe. It is popular on account of its large size and dark colour and will tolerate low humidity conditions. It will also graze on spider mite eggs and young larvae and so suppress low infestations.

Amblyline d

Predatory Mite

  • Dark coloured predator, easy to find and monitor
  • Establishes well on plants with pollen
  • Attacks larger thrips than A. cucumeris
  • Tolerates lower humidity than A. cucumeris
  • No diapause in short day lengths

Amblyseius degenerans is supplied in vermiculite with a food source and feeder ring in 30 ml plastic vials.

It originates in the Mediterranean region and North Africa and prefers smooth leaved plants, on which it actively hunts and seeks out small arthropod prey. Males attach themselves to immature females and mate soon after the final moult to adult females. The females will however eat the males if short of food.

Amblyseius degenerans has proved successful in North West Europe on greenhouse sweet peppers, but has not shown good establishment in Mediterranean crops. Trials on cucumbers, ornamentals, tomatoes and strawberries have been less successful. This predator is susceptible to chemical spray, including sulphur.

Instructions for use

Amblyseius degenerans should be released onto pepper plants at a rate of 0.5-2/mē once first flowers appear. The presence of pollen enhances establishment.
Tap vial firmly to dislodge mites. Gently rotate to disperse the mites throughout the vermiculite immediately before opening. Open in the greenhouse. Sprinkle the mixture onto the top leaves of the crop, rotating continuously as the mites move very quickly.
